God's extreme Love and extreme Justice
Legalism and Liberalism. Fanaticism and Indolence. Incredulity and Arrogance. Why, oh why, do humans
so often fall into one or the other, but not both? Why can't we be "innocent as doves and wise as serpents"? Why can't we rebuke sin and forgive it as well. Why can't we be like Jesus, who poured
contempt on the Hypocrites and balm on the Sin-bruised souls. Why can't we be like God, Who is both Righteous AND Merciful?
Perhaps it is because we don't understand the concepts, or closer still, because we haven't been personally touched by the extreme love or extreme justice.
Have you ever thought, really thought, about true justice? Where the penalty is measured not just by the letter of the Law but also by the motive behind the crime and how many persons were affected
by the transgression? Where nothing is hidden from the Judge and the Adversary can ask the most probing questions? Where the verdict needs no appeal because the condemned knows the judgment was
That's God! "His eyes were like flames of fire" (burning away every excuse); "Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him
with whom we have to do."
You don't want to meet this Guy!
And Mercy? Tell me, just how far would you go to obtain a pardon for your condemned teenage daughter? Would you take her place in prison? Would you die for her? Many parents would do this and have
done this. Many husbands and wives also have done the same for each other. Love does these kinds of things. But what if it were a cousin and not a daughter? Maybe a stranger, unrelated to you? Maybe
someone you knew but didn't like? Or someone who hurt you? It's easy to say "I love everybody", but hard to prove it.
The Bible says this about God's Love: "For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: tho perhaps for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we
were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
I cannot attain to that kind of Love. I can only be an object of it. It is beyond my ability to fully comprehend nor can I express its breadth even to my most dearest sweetheart. But this is God
Now it is indeed a paradox how God can be both. But no one disagrees that He is just and He is loving. I guess we'll just have to take it on faith. However, please, oh please, do not think that one
will over rule the other when it comes to your eternal destiny. God loves you and wants you to be with Him in Heaven. But you are also responsible for your transgressions and will have to pay for
them. This must be so or God is not just. And forever is not enough time to accomplish this if today finds us more behind than ahead in our deeds (and thoughts and words) of righteousness.
I'd be looking for a Savior if I were you.
